This nature center was planned as a part of Kumamoto Prefecter's "Aetpolis"project, and is subsidized by the Environment Angecy. It is located adjacent to a rest pavilion provided by the town of Matushima. Because the site lies within Unzen-Amakusa National Park, the design was regulated by many restrictions regarding color, plan geometry, and roof form. Exterior walls were required to follow seraight lines, which could be articulated through the use of patterns and variation in materials.Stones collected from the Amakusa region have been incoporated into the center's exterior and interior walls and floor surfaces, forming a kind of display of local natural resources. The center's south facades is entirely glazed, and the interior displays are arranged so as not to obstruct the sweetping view to tho sea, which itself forms a major element of the exhibition.
