Irreguler Topology

Wandering through the woods can be a source of great pleasure. Although all trees may look alike, no two trees are exactly the same. Although many places ay resemble each other, their topographies are invariably different. There is lack of uniformity with respect to both places and elements Walking aimlessly in the midst of such places and elements affords one endless opportunities to encounter the unexpected and to discover thins one had not realize until then. The sculptor Alberto Giacometti described a clearing in the woods he suddenly came upon one day as "a bright spherical sensation" The light must have penetrated the otherwise dark and thickly-wooded area in such a way as to crate the impression of a spherical open space. The clearing, which represented fiction as opposed to the reality of the woods, assumed in Giacometti's eyes an autonomous, perfect form. Topography, even a slight inclination of the ground, will endow a space with directionality or tendency. Left to themselves, people tend to sit so that they are looking down rather than up a slope. On a beach, everyone sits facing the sea. The homogeneity of space, that is the presence in space of disparities and tendencies, enables each individual to perceive subtle differences and to select a special place that is unique and comfortable for him or her. It is often by happenstance that one becomes aware of a slight difference in the quality of space. One can suddenly make such a discovery, even in familiar places one has passed through day after day.
